Imagine a lush tropical island in the Caribbean with a gorgeous 600′ waterfall. It feels endless with rocks and pools of water to wade in. What if you could jump right in and start climbing with no end in sight. This is Dunn’s River Falls.

Welcome to Heaven in Jamaica. This is by far one of my family’s favorite destinations and I can’t wait for you to experience it, too!

Note: Before going, check on age and height requirements. At the time of writing this, this excursion is for ages 6+ and must be 36″ tall.

How Hard is it to Climb Dunn’s River Falls?

You don’t have to be a super athlete to climb, but if you have any health issues, consult your doctor first. You will be climbing up slippery rocks. Some are some big steps. If you have bad knees or wobbly for any reason, this may not be for you. You can at least watch for a viewing area up top.

What helps make this an easier climb is that you won’t be climbing alone. This is a tourist destination and always seems to be busy. It may be busy, but oh so worth it! Trust me! You will have tour guides navigating your way up and helping you. You will create a chain holding hands with the person in front of you and behind you. This helps keep your balance as well as helps pull you up in some cases to the next big rock step ahead of you.

How Long Does it Take to Climb Dunn’s River Falls?

Allow a couple of hours at Dunn’s River Falls at least. If you are doing an excursion with a cruise, it’s a half day excursion that is 4 to 4.5 hours including transportation.

Let me add in here that transportation in Jamaica is a thrill ride in itself. If you think driving in Los Angeles is bad, imagine narrow roads, cliffs, and a big bus flying down the road like a bat out of hell. It will get your blood pumping! Oh, not to mention cars that like to jump out from the middle of nowhere.

What You Need to Take With You

Pack light. You don’t need to take much with you. There are lockers available to rent at the top of Dunn’s River Falls. Take a backpack with a change of clothes for afterwards. You will also need:

  • Credit card for snacks, souvenirs, photos, and videos
  • Cash for tips for your tour guide. The tour guides work hard to make your climb memorable and safe.
  • Water shoes. They must have a rubber sole with covered toes and heels. I have a pair of Tevas that look like actual tennis shoes and were very comfortable. They will still get sand in them, but they will stay on your feet and make climbing mush easier.
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses

Forget the iphone and camera and lock in the locker. First, it will get wet. Second, you won’t be able to carry it as you need both hands for climbing Dunn’s River Falls. If you do want to take it with you, figure out how to strap it to you wrist or around your neck. Make sure it’s secure in a waterproof cover.

You will have the opportunity to buy a video and photos from the tour agency which is worth it. You don’t have to worry about taking anything with you and can enjoy the moment. The video captures key moments throughout the climb.
